The first BOSS phaser pedal and one of the trio of compact pedals introduced in 1977, the PH-1 features a simpler control set than prior Roland phasers like the AP-2, AP-5, and AP-7.
The PH-1 is a four-stage phaser with a very broad LFO speed range. The extremes of the “Rate” knob correspond to periods of 100ms and 16s.
Positioned to compete with American offerings like the MXR Phase 90 and Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, the PH-1 was successful and started a product line that continues to this day. Its immediate successor was the PH-1R.
In 2017, the PH-1, along with the OD-1 and SP-1, was reissued as part of the 40th Anniversary Box set.
Version Differences
- The PH-1 was made with both silver and black thumb screws
- As with other early compact pedals, the earliest variants use the “momentary” LED functionality on the “Check” light, which was later replaced by the “latching” functionality
